Jiu-Jitsu Grandmaster Helio Gracie passed away today at the age of 95. Grandmaster Helio will be forever remembered for what he has done in the world of martial arts. He was a legend and was able to watch what he created evolve into a world wide phenomenon.
A few days earlier he was admitted into a local hospital in Itaipaiva, Rio de Janeiro for stomach problems. “His impact on the sport of mixed martial arts was profound. His son, Rorion, was credited with developing the concept that became the Ultimate Fighting Championship, and another of his sons, Royce, won the first two UFC tournaments in 1993 and 1994. Two other sons, Rickson and Royler, also competed in MMA.” – Sherdog.com
I had the honor of personally meeting and training with Grandmaster Helio Gracie many years ago. He was a kind gentle old man with a great sense of humor. He will definitely never be forgotten by me and of course the whole mixed martial arts community. I want to take this opportunity to send my condolences to the Gracie family.
