Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Miami: A Survival Guide for Beginners

Don’t Give Up! The challenges of being new to MIAMI BJJ
A common expression in martial arts is “Every black belt is a white belt who never gave up.” Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Miami is complex and detail oriented, and can be very overwhelming for those who are brand new to the sport. At first you will get tapped out. Repeatedly. It might get frustrating and seem like you will never see improvement, but you will. The number one rule is not to give up. Always try to improve your position. Relax, breathe, and keep moving. When you don’t know what else to do, shrimp! One of the most important things you can do learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Miami is to train. A lot. Roll as often and with as many partners as you can.

Learn the Fundamentals: How to succeed in Evolution’s martial arts Miami BJJ program
In order to get the most out of martial arts Miami, you must master the fundamentals of Miami BJJ. Don’t stop learning when class is over. Do some research on your own. Watch videos, read forums or blogs. Most importantly, don’t be afraid to ask questions! “Make learning your first priority. Do not be discouraged by losing, as it is a fast track to improving. If you do all of your losing in the gym, you’ll have nothing but winning left for competition.”

 – Frankie Segredo BJJ blue belt, Coach and amateur MMA fighter

Be a Good Partner
Part of being successful in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Miami is being a good training partner. You want to make others feel comfortable drilling and training with you. Men, in particular may feel nervous about training with a female partner, and vice versa.

Check your ego.
Assume the best of everyone…don’t ever doubt someone’s ability because of their size, gender, or fitness level.  Keep it light and bring positive vibes onto the mat. If you are open to learning from everyone, you will excel quickly. Once you become more advanced, remember how it felt to be a white belt. Roll with people who are new to martial arts Miami and help them learn to love BJJ.

Train with control.
The art of Jiu Jitsu relies on technique, not strength. Don’t be a limp noodle for your partner, but also don’t use all of your force to try and submit your opponent. You don’t want to injure your partner in practice. It can be difficult to keep your emotions in check when you are being tapped out constantly, but don’t lose your cool!

Don’t be the “smelly gi guy” (or girl)!
An essential part of being a good partner in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Miami means practicing good hygiene. If you consistently show up to the gym smelling ripe, people won’t want to roll with you and you’ll miss out on valuable training opportunities. Always toss your gi and workout clothes into the washing machine as soon as you get home.
